Ostrich
Ostriches are the largest birds in the world. Interestingly, although they do lay the largest bird’s egg in the world, it is actually the smallest in proportion to the mother at just 2% of her body weight. While the ostrich is not a kosher bird, their eggs were frequently used as decorations in shuls. This is because of a popular myth that the ostrich does not incubate her eggs by sitting on them like other birds. Instead, the ostrich was said to stare at her eggs and focus on them intently until they hatched. The ostrich eggs that appear in shuls are meant to remind people to focus on their prayers.
