Grasshopper
What’s the difference between a grasshopper and a locust? In this display, you might see what looks like two different insects: small, yellow and black grasshoppers without wings, and large brown locusts with long wings. However, these are actually the same animal, just at different stages in its life! The smaller ones are young grasshoppers that have yet to molt, but you can already see the small wing cases on their backs. Under certain conditions, adult grasshoppers begin to gather together in huge numbers. They grow larger and become hungrier, traveling as swarms with the wind, devouring everything in sight. These massive swarms of grasshoppers are usually called locusts. “Grasshopper” and “Locust” are different names for the same creature as it changes!
