Eland
The Giant Eland is the largest species of antelope in the world, with males weighing over a ton and horns up to a meter and a half long. The eland is a kosher animal and the horns can be used to make a shofar, but in modern Israel, eland have a new job: they serve in the IDF. Herds of eland can be found in IDF bases around the country, especially along the northern border. Like cattle, eland are herbivores and consume huge amounts of vegetation each day. However, unlike cattle, which mostly eat grasses and leaves, eland also eat roots and thorny branches. In places where there are long stretches of fence that must be kept clear, the eland are allowed to roam, eating their fill and performing an important service in the process.
